What an example and observer of true beauty Maya was!
Her the fruits of her talents and inspiration will be with us for a very long time.
When I was in art school in the late 80’s, working hard to do my best in my many studio classes, I had the opportunity to hear Maya speak on our campus, as the year’s Carnegie-Mellon ledcturer.
I knew nothing about her other than the title of her book,I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
And I had projects due.
So I didn’t go.
All I heard about the next day was her presentation. People, especially the women, (and the majority of students there were women), were on FIRE!
It was one of the biggest regrets of my 20’s. And I swore I would never miss out on this type of opportunity again.
And life is good.
Many years later, I got to hear her speak here in Marquette, and even shake her hand afterward and tell her of my prior regret.
And now we continue to benefit all the riches her great spirit has bequeathed us, even as we’ll miss having her here with us in physical form.
Thank you, Maya! You have so blessed us, and now it’s Heaven’s turn to have the blessing of you.
